Calcinosis cutis

I have had SLE for 36 years and have developed, amongst many other things, calcinosis in my finger joints and most severely on my knees. In 2020 I had surgery to remove a large amount from my left knee because of infection. Since then my right knee has been continuously developing a very large growth of calcinosis that is clearly visible to the eye and on xray. I have also had calcinosis surgically remove from 3 fingers and my thigh in the last 6 months. The calcinosis on my knees causes my legs and knees to ache keeping me awake at night and reducing me to tears. Does anyone else suffer with this type of pain that can offer solutions for easing the pain as I feel that doctors have put me in the "too hard" basket.

  1. ,
My goodness...I'm saddened to hear what you are going through!
From what I understand calcinosis is rather rare but can be triggered by a viral infection or an auto-immune condition (amongst other things).
Treatment sounds a bit challenging (as you already learned).
If we have others in this community that are experiencing calcinosis hopefully they may chime in here as well.
I wish you all the best, Doreen (Team Member)

  2. I have been awakened at night with severe pain my knee that has brought me to tears I understand anyone who has gone through this pain

    1. , well, ugh! That sounds pretty miserable! I hope you don't experience this pain very often. Have doctors been able to offer you any possible causes for the pain? What about ways to manage the pain?

  3. Deedee12 I feel your pain. Is it calcinosis cutis perhaps? Have you had scans of your knee done? My GP seems to think it could be that the calcinosis cutis is so big in my knees that it may be squeezing in on the nerves and muscles in my legs causing severe pain. I have been referred to a surgeon to see if it can be removed, or at least some of it. I would be grateful for any relief.
