Lupus symptom or not?

Just curious… does anyone else have times when their tongue is painful, like it’s been burned? When this happens there are no visible ulcers or sores, but lordy does it hurt! I usually have to stick to a soft and bland diet for a couple of days until it goes away.

  1. Hi, ! I am sorry you are dealing with tongue pain. Many people with Lupus do experience tongue pain that is tied to mouth sores, but you mentioned that there are no sores. There is a condition that likes to tag a long with Lupus called Sjogren's and Sjogren's can cause tongue soreness. You can read more about it here and see if it sounds like something you might be dealing with -- https://lupus.net/living/sjogrens-syndrome-connection. Also, if you are experiencing this issue pretty regularly, you might want to track the frequency of these episodes and then see if you can find any links (medications, changes in your diet, allergies, etc). Do you notice any other symptoms, like that your tongue looks extra red or discolored or swollen or anything like that? Does it hurt constantly or when you are eating and drinking? I can't say for sure what's going on and I have learned that autoimmune conditions like to throw out some really weird symptoms at any time. I do hope you are able to get to the bottom of what's going on and get some lasting relief very soon!

  2. YES!! I frequently had sores down the sides of my tongue. But in 2021, one day out of nowhere my mouth felt like it had been burned with hot cheese pizza. It's not been the same since. It feels like it is pealing at times and sometimes feels like it has cuts on it. I was told I had lichen planus, but the periodontist I saw did not recommend biopsy due to it increasing risk of oral cancer.

    1. , ugh. I am sorry you are all too familiar with tongue sores and tongue pain. I know it must be incredibly unpleasant for you. Did your periodontist offer any treatment options for your lichen planus? Best, Erin, Team member.

  3. Yes mine burns and also I can feel it swell and I feel like I’m gonna gag. The sores I get are mainly inside of my cheeks or gums. But my tongue burns so bad at times I don’t try to eat. I’ll have a quick Ensure Protein shake and use a straw.

Oh my goodness, that sounds quite unbearable.
Some in this community have mentioned that saliva stimulators, special toothpastes, lozenges, or hard candies have helped provide some relief.
In more severe cases, others have mentioned, anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive drugs have helped alleviate some of these painful symptoms.
I certainly hope you can find some much-needed relief.

  4. I also get the burning tongue feeling. I mentioned it to my Rheumatologist and she said it was Sojiens but did not tell me what to do for it. I also get sloughing of skin from the roof of my mouth- and have gotten no suggestions for it. My PCP, Rheumatologist and dentist have not offered any help for the tongue or skin problem in my mouth.

I'm saddened you are experiencing this rather excruciating pain without any help or relief.
Many comments in this thread offer some helpful suggestions.
