My Son Is Suffering With Lupus

26 years ago my son returned from a trip to Spain. He was so sick that he barely made it home. Unknown to me, he had a predisposition to lupus.

That's when life changed

After a horrific flight of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, he finally arrived home. He had sores in his mouth, a rash on his face, clubbed fingernails, sore joints, and kidney pain. After several doctor visits and hospital visits, he was sent home and told to take Tylenol and elevate his swollen legs.

Finally getting diagnosed

He started having severe migraine headaches, I took him to St. Catharine's hospital, where he had a stroke in the ER. He was diagnosed and transported to Toronto Western. He had spent a total of 4.5 months there and had many near-death experiences. He had 3 more strokes and 25 seizures, lost a kidney, was on dialysis, and was in a coma for 52 days. He had been on total life support and had a craniotomy due to the clot on his brain.

A never ending battle

He lost 70 pounds and suffers PTSD. He lost his fiancé, his education, and his friends. His whole life changed. He continues to suffer daily after 26 years of enduring this horrible disease. Dr. Urowitz said that he was the worst case of lupus he had seen. I also suffer watching him every day. I am so tired of people saying "why aren't you working?" or "you don't look sick." I hope no one else has to suffer like him.
