Optical hypertension and fast growing cataracts

This last eye exam, the opthomologist said my cataracts had grown fast and I was suffering from optical hypertension. He said I needed my cataracts removed immediately. As I researched this problem, I learnt that extended use of corticosteroids as well as lupus can cause this. I was fortunate to have been diagnosed over 30 years ago by a wonderful rheumatologist but I had never heard of this. I can barely see from my left eye and my right eye is not far behind. This past year I was aware my eyesight was becoming worse but I was surprised by just how much.
Has anyone else had this problem and I can't imagine trying to make it without my prednisone. I just hope removing the cataracts remedies this problem.

  1. Eye and vision complications are quite common with Lupus.
As you mentioned, eye issues may be caused by the disease itself or by some of the drugs used to treat lupus. I thought I'd share this article that discusses how lupus affects the eyes: https://lupus.net/eyes In the meantime, I'm sending you positive thoughts for your cataract surgery. Please keep us updated when you get a chance.

    2. I have lupus and woke up one morning and couldn't see! I went to the Dr and had a cataract removed! I didn't know that lupus was the reason I had the cataract!

      1. , That sounds very scary! I'm glad they were able to remove it. How are you doing lately?
