Questions to ask a rheumatologist?

For many managing lupus, it can be difficult to find the right doctor. What questions would you like to ask a rheumatologist that specializes in lupus?

  1. What's the best medicine..I have lupus ra. heart issues...and the list goes on
    .

    1. , Autoimmune conditions seem to come in groups as if one isn't enough to manage independently! What treatment plan are you currently on?

  2. Diagnosed with Lupus 6 months before I just turned 70 yrs old. I must have had it a while but first question was my hair coming out, joint inflammation and more. Shortness of breath came next. Keep oxygen on round the clock. Now my gallbladder needs out but no surgeon will put me to sleep to operate. I'm a goner if it rupters. What would you do?

    1. , I'm so sorry for the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. This sounds like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do you have a doctor you trust to discuss their opinion of non-surgical options? Thinking of you!

    2. I’m so sorry you have so much to deal with. Can you talk with your doctor and discuss your options at all? ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

  3. I’m trying to understand why labs still offer (and some providers order) a basic ANA multiplex teat that only tests for 5 antibodies. Other than autoimmune testing, is there something else the basic ANA could be useful for? Even a lot of labs have disclaimers saying that the ACR recommends IFA but yet they’re still offering the test.

    1. , This is a great question. ANA blood tests are used to detect Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, Scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome, Addison Disease, and autoimmune hepatitis. All of which are autoimmune conditions.

  4. I have SLE and Psoriatic Arthritis. Since kidney disease runs in my family, my rheumatologist recommends treating the SLE. Unfortunately, that means that my PsA is untreated. I have used Methotrexate and Sulfasalazine, but they seemed to have no effect on the PsA. Are there other treatment options I can discuss with my doctor?

    1. sorry you are dealing with not only lupus and Psa. It can be so difficult to find a treatment plan that helps everything. You have some very good questions that your doctor and you can really explore. I wish I had an answer for what would work and what to ask doctors. I have sat down with my doctor and asked to work with me on a plan that can help me best. I had to make a special appointment that we sat for over 20 minutes to work towards getting in tune with it all. Is that something you may be able to do with your doctor? I’m holding space for you to find some relief and a treatment plan that will help some. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member
