ANA test

Is it possible to get a negative ANA test because of not being in an active flare? I always have low grade symptoms like a fever and fatigue but I think I've recently discovered that the sun triggers severe flares (significant weakness like I can barely stand for a few minutes, shortness of breath, tightness in my chest, extreme exhaustion like I can sleep for 3 days through my flares, sometimes I have joint pain but it depends, and the main attraction: the horribly debilitating migraine that pulses and every time it pulses it then goes through my whole body). I've had various rashes, that was one of my earliest symptoms, a bright rash that looked like my skin was swollen all over my face after an outdoor unit in the winter in my senior year of school. I've had an ANA test shortly after I started getting sick in 2020 but im wondering if it's possible it was either too early or if I wasn't in an active significant flare if it didn't show up properly?

  1. , I'm so sorry you are experiencing so much pain and discomfort without answers! Lupus is a complex condition that unfortunately can be hard to diagnose. It is possible to have lupus and have negative ANA blood test results, here is a link to a forum with a similar question where some community members have shared their experiences: https://lupus.net/forums/negative-ana I hope this helps! You are not alone!

    1. lupus can be so quirky. It seems like you’ve been going through so much. Bloodwork can surely be good while we are actually feeling bad. It’s one of those things that we’ll never understand. For me my meds keep my bloodwork stable but I still have flares. Welcome to the forum hopefully you can get with your doctor to explain it more concisely. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member
