Test Results

I have a positive ANA Titer 1:640 Pattern Smooth Speckled and a positive Anti-double stranded DNA Antibody(SLE) 41. My doctor started me on hydroxychloroquine but is not ready to give me a firm Lupus diagnosis. What do my test results mean?

  1. Understanding lab work can be complicated. While we are not medical professionals and cannot give you a full picture of your unique results and medical conclusions, this article has some helpful information about the different aspects of lupus lab work: https://lupus.net/clinical/understanding-lab-work For example in reference to some of the tests you mentioned: (1) Anti-double-stranded DNA: Specific for (unique to) lupus. About 30 percent of people with lupus have a positive test. A positive test may indicate more severe lupus, especially affecting the kidneys. (2) the DNA antibody: Of people with lupus, 98 percent test positive for antinuclear antibody. But you can have a positive test without having lupus. There is more information in the article I linked above. I hope some of this helps and your doctor is able to have a more in depth conversation with you soon about your results! Sending gentle hugs!
