Mouth sores/ulcers

One of my most common symptoms of lupus is the mouth sores/ulcers. They appear everywhere in my mouth and last up to two weeks. They are extremely painful and nothing I do seems to help. I've tried the mouthwashes, watching what I eat, switching my tooth brush. The only thing that seems to help the pain is Campho Phenique but only for a few minutes. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions that have helped them? Has your doctor every prescribed you something specific just for mouth ulcers like a gel/ointment? Has anyone tried the red light therapy? Thank you!

  1. While we wait for community members who can speak to their personal experienced with treatment for painful mouth sores, I wanted to share a link to an article that outlines some treatment options and foods to avoid to try to manage the pain: https://lupus.net/symptoms/ulcers I hope this helps! Sending gentle hugs to you

    1. thank you! The article was very informative

  2. Ava, I also suffer from intense mouth and tongue sores. I've been researching to find what might relieve the sores and pain associated with this. Eating for the most part is painful to the point I could care less about eating anymore. What I did get was 2% lidocaine oral tropical solution. I pretty much numb my entire inside of my mouth in order to eat. But the lidocaine does not last very long. It difficult to eat a healthy meal. Cup of hot tea with honey helps calm the soreness down. Wish you luck.

    1. yes lidocaine definitely numbs it all up. The tea helps too those are great ideas to try. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

    2. Talk to your rheumatologist and ask if folic acid would help. That's what I take.

  3. My doctor prescribed Valtrax which worked for two months then they started to break out even with the medicine so I stopped taking it…we take enough meds so we don’t need to take those that don’t work. I have found that taking a probiotic helps to keep them to a minimum. There are a lot out there, I take acidophilus.

    1. Thank you! I will try that.

    2. I didn't think about the probiotics thanks for that. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

  4. The ulcers are the worst and so painful. My doctor's presceibes something for thrush that I swish and swallow. With the ulcers I usually get thrush too. Its called Nyactin and it works to clear it a up. With that I drink a lot of water and limit salt. It takes a while to work but when it does it takes it out well. I tried res light therapy but I'm super photosensitive and it caused a flare. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member
