Lupus recurring after numerous years of remission

Good Afternoon, All. I'm hoping for some validation. In 1973 I was given Azo Gantrisin for a UTI. I quite quickly developed a butterfly rash, joint pain and extremely fatigued. I was quickly pulled off this med yet it took me approximately a year to recover from joint pain and fatigue. (I was in my early 20's at the time) Doctors at that time did not treat me for any of the symptoms. I don't recall any flare ups until now at age 71. I have not taken any medications other than an anti-anxiety med which I have taken for years. Doctors are now questioning me and of course the doctor prescribing this med in 1973 has long since passed as are my records from way back then. Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this kind of scenario? Any and All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, All. Sincerely, MelW

  1. Hi, !

First off, I am sorry you are experiencing Lupus symptoms after such a long time wihtout any. How frustrating!

Your situation intrigued me, so I did a little digging and I actually came across another case of a young adult taking azogantrisin and then being diagnosed with Lupus in 1973 (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0012369215393740). So, apparently, this can and does happen. As far as your long remission, members of our community have experienced some very long remissions, but yours may be the longest I have come across on this site.

So. What are the doctors questioning you about? Are they doubting your initial Lupus diagnosis?

I'm just curious about that. Based on the symptoms you described, you experienced a pretty typical Lupus episode back in the 70's. But, I am not your doctor, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Anyway, apologies for not really answering your initial questions, but I hope your symptoms are being addressed and treated at this time!
