Histamine intolerance

My newly acquired "allergy" problem is driving me nuts. We've used Singulair, prednisone, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and other antihistamines. We've decided it is histamine intolerance. Now what? And, my heat intolerance is also worsening (year round)

  1. , I'm sorry to hear you are managing that on top of other lupus symptoms. Heat is a trigger for many living with lupus, but can be hard to escape this time of year. I'm not sure if you already know this or not, but our parent company also has a site dedicated to people managing allergies. It might be worth checking out to see if anyone has treatment advice: https://allergies.net/ Hope it helps and that this summer isn't too hot!

    1. thank you!!

  2. I can definitely relate . I’ve had some serious issues with the sun and allergies. It took a while to get the cocktail to get it under control. I had to use a combination of Benadryl, prednisone, Allegra and oddly enough Prilosec. Definitely talk to your doctor before trying any of that. That’s just what. Worked for me. I hope you find something that works for you. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

    1. thanks so much. I get very little sleep and can't go anywhere because I sneeze and blow my nose constantly. I'm taking benadryl and Singulair (?). My poor old nose has sores and bleeds from time to time. I really appreciate your quick response! Soonest appt available w/PCP 7/14 but she is great at responding to emails. Thanks again and have an awesome day!!

    2. aww that must be so hard to deal with. I tell people all the time that I am allergic to the sun. ~Racquel~ lupus.net

  3. Racquel, I was wondering if you have rapid reactions to sun or strong indoor lights. My hands and arms swell, veins dilate and I get large soft tissue bumps that pop up on my arms. When I get inside/low lights everything returns to normal within a very few minutes. Just wondering. Thanks again!!

    1. absolutely it really depends on the day on the reaction. I stay out of malls because of the harsh lights and out of the sun during the hottest portions of the day. I get hives, heat bumps and swelling. Highly photosensitive. It’s hard to plan but I have learned how to go out early and if I have to be out to be sure to cover up and use sunscreen. ~Racquel~ lupus.bet team member

  4. I developed hives on my legs, chest and arms. Not sure if it was sun exposure, or a reaction to my sunscreen. The hives were unbelievably itchy (like mosquito bites) and the oral prednisone course, nor zyrtec seemed to help much. The hives are better, but skin colored and still present a full week later. Does this seem like a photosensitive rash or contact dermatitis? I do have an appointment with an allergist tomorrow...just wondering if anyone has experienced this? My lupus has been non symptomatic to this point.

    1. I hope your appointment went well. What was the course of treatment and did it help at all ? ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

    2. hi! I haven't experienced symptoms like yours but, it sounds very uncomfortable. Hopefully, your allergist can help you with that.
