What is the first visit like after Lupus Diganosis

What can I expect for the first appointment to my Rheumatologist First

  1. , The first visit can be a little overwhelming. One of our patient leaders wrote an article with tips for your first Rheumatology visit that I think might be of interest to you: https://lupus.net/living/tips-rheumatologist-visit. One of the tips she lists is to come prepared to share the symptoms you have been experiencing, that can sometimes be hard to remember in the moment. We have a free downloadable symptom tracker that you could use to help organize your thoughts about your symptoms ahead of time so you don't have to worry about forgetting anything in the moment: https://lupus.net/living/symptom-tracker. Also, one of our contributors who is a Rheumatologist wrote an article about topics to discuss with your doctor that you may want to consider for your first visit: https://lupus.net/living/rheumatologist-appointments. I hope some of this is helpful. Know that you are not alone. We are here to listen and support along the way. Keep us in the loop with how it goes!

    1. whew honestly many questions for you, a lot of information followed by a lot of confusion. I would say bring a pen and paper and someone you trust to help you digest all of the information. Unfortunately the doctor may speak a lot of foreign things to you. I always made sure to ask the doctor to speak in layman terms. Don't be afraid to ask questions I usually write some down to bring with me. Also I had to just open my heart and my mind to receive what the doctor was saying without getting frustrated or scared by all the information. It's normal to feel overwhelmed just speak with the doctor and let them know so they can help you through. I hope it goes okay and let us know how it goes. Sending you good vibes to understand and feel comfortable with the doctor and your treatment plan. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

      1. My rheumatologist is also a Lupus patient. Her insights are invaluable. It’s almost as if we are clones! I’m sorry she has the difficulties but glad to have such an understanding person in my court. Took my husband to my last visit and it was remarkable insight got him! Someone else with my odd symptoms!

        1. it makes a difference when the doctor also understands the issues from experience. So glad that you were able to have your husband there and insight was given. Feels good to be seen and heard fully. ~Racquel ~ lupus.net team member
