Digestive issues

Does anybody fight getting nausea diarrhea, for no reason. Food is offensive to the smell?

  1. Hi, !

Unfortunately, digestive issues aren't all that uncommon with Lupus, especially if you are on immunosuppressants used to manage your Lupus symptoms. Here's some information on how Lupus can affect one's digestive system -- https://lupus.net/gastrointestinal-system. And here's some info on immunosuppressant medications and digestive health -- https://lupus.net/living/immunosuppressants. Also, I wanted to share one last piece from one of our contributors about the issues Lupus can cause (including digestive issues) -- https://lupus.net/living/kidney-problems. Definitely check out the comments at the end of her piece to read what experiences other community members have with Lupus. I can only share three active links per comment, so I am going to leave one more comment talking about your smell issues.

    1. Hi, !

      Here's comment #2 from me 😀

So, sensitivity to smells is not recognized as a Lupus symptom, but people with Lupus know better, right?

Classify this one as a "weird and wacky symptom of Lupus". Doctors may struggle to explain why this happens, but people living with Lupus know it DOES happen. Here's a link to a compilation made from our community members' comments on their more unique Lupus symptoms (including smell sensitivity) -- https://lupus.net/living/strange-lupus-symptoms.

I hope this helps and I hope other community members see your post here and chime in, as I know you are definitely not alone in what you are experiencing!

Thanks for reaching out and please don't hesitate to let us know if you have more Lupus related questions. We're happy to help in any way we can.

      1. Yes! I have awful nausea and vomit a lot. I can’t take the smell of food, or I will vomit almost immediately. It’s awful.

        1. I get nausea on and off. I have more of an issue of food going right through me and it’s not even diarrhea it like a regular bowel movement. When I get the nausea I chew gum and suck on peppermint it helps a lot. Have you talked to your doctor about it all yet? ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member
