Diet

I'm a full gastric bypass patient. Nobody can point me in the right direction for eating with lupus. It's a odd combination. I don't eat like normal people. I'm on a heavy regiment of vitamins with a body who tells me what and how much I can eat. It changes all the time.

  1. , Its a bit hard to say, just because everyone's body is different and unique to them, so there isn't a one-size-fits-all diet plan. These article has some information about what foods to avoid and which to embrace: (1) https://lupus.net/living/nutrition (2) https://lupus.net/living/anti-inflammatory-diet I hope this helps!

    1. Thanks Gabby

      1. Every body is different. I haven't had the gastric bypass but I know some who have. That makes it just a little hard to really pin down what to really eat. I have found that food journaling always helps. It really shows you how your body reacts to food. You can also talk with your bariatric surgeon to see what they feel may be the best cause of action for you. ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

        1. Hi Racquel, I've had two gastric bypass doctors in the past thirteen years. Both had since retired. I have had Lupus about a year and a half. I'm in the process of trying to find a new doctor who has the experience plus being open to how it can relate to Lupus difficulties. Keeping a log is a good idea but hard because my body tells me on any given day what it will let me eat or not. But, I will try. Thanks for your input and concern.

        2. I understand. It's such a difficult navigation. If you don't mind me asking, is there a specific diet you have to follow because of the gastric bypass or is it the amount alone that has to be modified? With the vitamins are there certain foods that will help your body absorb them better? ~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

      2. My goal is 90mg of protein from meats and fish. I also look for high vitamin K greens. Of course with a pouch size stomach it doesn't allow for much. I try to incorporate them into soups account they go down faster. I never get hungry, I usually eat by time of day as long as I'm not busy. I miss a lot of meal if I lose track of time. My vitamin regiment twice a day helps a awful lot. I rarely eat foods that don't fulfill my nutritionally needs. I'm not saying I don't enjoy a occasional treat or two. But I don't abuse to to much.

        1. , I'm glad you hear you are prioritizing your nutritional needs, but also leaving some time for a treat or two here and there! Thanks for sharing with us
