Lupus & Pregnancy

I was diagnosed with SLE while still young but I have always dreamt of having a family someday. Is this still possible with lupus? Does a choice of doctor/rheuma/gynae make a difference?

  1. HI ,
    Thanks for reaching out.
This is a common question amongst quite a few of our community members.
Many years ago, doctors advised women with lupus against having children. Today, thanks to improvements in medicine, many women with stable, mild to moderate lupus can safely get pregnant and deliver a healthy baby. However, it is still considered a high-risk pregnancy because women with lupus are at higher risk. I do hope others will chime in with their personal experiences. In the meantime, I thought I'd share a few articles that may provide some helpful information:https://lupus.net/women and https://lupus.net/living/flares-pregnancy

    1. great question. I thi k it depends on how lupus has affected your body and what meds you are on. it's definitely a something to discuss further qith your doctor. Pregnancy is one of the most strenuous things that can be rough especially if lupus isn't under control.~Racquel~ lupus.net team member

      1. It is still very possible. Many of our writers/moderators are mothers themselves. Please discuss this with your rheumatologist, OBGYN and also a high risk OBGYN to find out more details.
