coughing

I have a chronic cough and after many doctor appointments, noone can find the cause. Has anyone else been dealing with such a cough?

  1. Hi, !

I know dealing with a chronic cough can be annoying! Pardon what may seem like some stupid questions, but have you seen and ENT and/or an allergist about the cough? Is it a dry or wet cough? Have they not offered *any* suggestions as to what could be behind the cough? Do you experience any other symptoms, like shortness of breath?

Apolgies for all the questions and please know you do not have to answer them. Some people with Lupus will experience coughing, but it's usually related to another issue, like allergies or a virus or asthma. Also, people with Lupus sometimes experience Acute Lupus Pneumonia, but I don't know if your symptoms quite fit that. You can read more about it here -- https://lupus.net/respiratory. The link also covers other breathing/lung issues people with Lupus might face, so I hope the information is helpful for you.

I hope you are able to shake the cough, or, at the very least, get to the bottom of what is causing it!

    1. I'd had a bad cough for awhile. My new gp had said she was determined to fix it. She ordered a ct for me. It showed up then. It's incurable but I mostly manage it after the respiratory specialist sent me to various therapists and a targeted antibiotic. Just one more disease to manage unfortunately. Thanks for asking ❤️

    2. , I am really glad your doctor was determined to get answers for you! And though your condition isn't curable (and is one more thing you need to manage), I am glad there are some treatment options that can help.

  2. … I have had a cough like that numerous times .. do you see a pulmonologist ?? Ask to get a sputum test to check for bacteria. After months of trying to figure out my cough .. it ended up being MAC .. Mycobacterial Avium Complex.

    1. Wow ok that must of been difficult to deal with for sure. I did find this information on it just in case someone else wants to know. https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/mac-lung-disease

    2. it was not easy … all the antibiotics messed up my stomach the whole 18 months !!

  3. just looping back have you been able to see anyone about the cough? Sometimes medications can cause some coughing or some post nasal dripping. I hope you were able to see someone and get some answers and relief. ~Racquel~ Team Member

  4. I dealt with a chronic cough for about a year. My PCP couldn't find anything. I went to a Pulmonologist. She asked me so many questions about health and living environment. Finally figured out that the humidifier in my house was the culprit. I was cleaning or changing the filter every 2 weeks. Once I started cleaning it once a week, my cough got better.

    1. , I am really glad you joined this conversation, as we have humidifiers in our home and two of my family members struggle with asthma and allergies already. Now, I'm off to clean my humidifiers (and try to get on a once a week schedule)! 😉
