Skin Conditions

My dermatologist suggested I have petechaie on my legs. This started about 15 years ago when I was in a theme park in the heat with socks and tennis shoes on all day. It mostly went away and returned on a trip to Mexico years later or it happens anytime I am outside for a length of time in the summer. Is this caused by Lupus or is it a separate condition?

  1. Hi, !

First, I am sorry you are dealing with this skin condition. I know having one more thing to deal with can be frustrating and downright annoying, especially when you are already dealing with Lupus!

So, about your question. Petechaie can be a complication of Lupus, in a bit of a roundabout way. People with Lupus can experience a complication called Thrombocytopenia, which is basically a fancy name for a low blood platelet count. This condition can occasionally be serious and affect one's blood clotting abilities, so definitely talk to your doctor if you think you may be experiencing Thrombocytopenia. It can also cause bruising and discolorations, including petechaie. You can read more about blood disorders and Lupus here -- https://lupus.net/blood-abnormalities. These disorders are generally quite manageable when being properly treated, so again, let your doctor know if you think you may have this.
