Second opinion and starting medication prior

Hi! I am in the process of being diagnosed and Doctor and I both believe I have Lupus. Blood work has been negative so far with high ANA. The Rheumatologist is ready to start me on Plaquenil but I wish I could have a more definitive diagnosis before starting it. However, my symptoms are worsening quickly and the doctor I am going to for a second opinion can't see me for 2 months. Should I start the medication now knowing she can always change the treatment? Will my taking it alter my blood work so that she can't adequately diagnose me? Thank you for any input.

  1. Hi, !

I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but, really, it's your decision. I know you know that, but it really comes down to what feels right to you. Medications can affect your bloodwork, but most meds do take some time to reach full efficacy (from 6-12 weeks, depending on the medication). And, getting treatment started can help you get a handle on your symptoms and the damage being done to your body.

However, I get that you would like to have a firm, accurate diagnosis. And, since a rheumatologist can look at your previous bloodwork results and see your elevated ANA, they can take the into consideration when looking at any new labwork.

So, my musings here probably didn't help you very much and I apologize for that. But, the long and the short of it is, it's your decision. Neither option is wrong, so it's going to come down to what you feel most comfortable with at this time.

Good luck! I know it's not an easy decision and please do keep us updated, if you feel comfortable doing so.
