Road trip essentials with lupus

Here are my tips and tricks for a fun road trip with lupus.

1. Medications

Whenever I go on vacation, my prescription medication is the first thing I pack. If I forget slippers I can always buy those at the store. But, if I forget my prescription medications it will be such a hassle trying to figure out how I can get some of medication for the next few days. It's essential to also pack more than enough medication to cover the duration of the journey, plus a few extra days in case of unexpected delays.

2. Medical card/bracelets

If you have a medical alert card or bracelet that identifies your lupus diagnosis or any other chronic illnesses be sure to bring that too. Having this information on hand can provide peace of mind in case of medical emergencies.

3. Sun protection

Sunlight can trigger lupus flares in many individuals, making sun protection a top priority for road trips. Many people tend to forget that UVA/UVB exposure does occur while you are in your car. So, for our cars we bought these window shades and it has helped tremendously. I also pack an umbrella, wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, and clothing that covers exposed skin which can help minimize exposure to the harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is also a must.

4. Comfortable clothing and layers

Packing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is vital for a road trip. We usually alternate with the AC and the windows down. Just because I get too cold easily. So, layers are a must for me. Layers can help accommodate varying temperatures in the car and at different destinations.

5. Hydration and snacks

We have a cooler and fill it with bottles of water. Staying hydrated is crucial, as dehydration can exacerbate lupus symptoms. We also like to pack snacks such as fruits, nuts, chips, crackers which can help maintain energy levels and prevent fatigue.

6. Rest and breaks

Fatigue is a common symptom of lupus, so it’s important to schedule regular breaks during the drive. We plan for bathroom breaks at rest stops. That way we can stretch, rest, and refresh. If there is more than one person that can drive in your group, it is best to share driving responsibilities to reduce strain.

7. Comfortable seating and support

This was a game changer for me and I didn’t even know I needed it until I bought it. But, consider bringing cushions or lumbar supports to enhance comfort during long periods of sitting. Adjusting seat positions to support posture can also help minimize joint pain and stiffness.

8. Emergency and first aid

I pack a well-stocked first aid kit, including Tylenol, aspirin, Pepto Bismol, Immodium, bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary medical supplies specific to lupus care. It’s also wise to have a list of nearby medical facilities along the route in case of emergencies.

9. Entertainment and relaxation

I usually have a playlist set for our road trips and will take turns with my husband on what we should listen to. But, you can also bring books, audiobooks, or downloaded podcasts to stay entertained and relaxed during the journey.

10. Flexibility and self-care

Lastly, approach the road trip with flexibility. Listen to your body and be willing to adjust plans if needed. Prioritize self-care, whether it means taking an extra rest day or finding a quiet spot to relax.
