Events for Lupus Support

Living with lupus, I found myself making friendships and opening doors I could not believe could be opened. I attended a lupus basketball charity event hosted in Dallas, Texas. It was an eight hour drive to get there from New Orleans, LA. At this event, I was able to make connections I never thought I could. I connected with families of lupus patients and lupus patients themselves.

The long drives that people made to play basketball and raise money for lupus was heroic. It taught me to never hold back on my blessings. This event was a bunch of people coming together for a big cause.

Charity event

I was one of the coaches at the charity event, and I represented the purple team. Of course we brought that fire to the court. I met some people that definitely work in the media industry, and I met someone that was in the basketball world who had lupus as well. She had the biggest personality I have ever experienced.

The event was to bring everyone together for a good cause, and to help people realize that there is help and people are there for them.

I ended up being awarded. I was supposed to attend in 2018 and ended up not being able to attend, but I am so glad I made it in 2023. It was the best experience I've ever had.

Why events like this matter

I attend events to tell my kids that I am not giving up. I am going to make to through to the end to make sure they have what I didn’t. Having lupus can already be a downfall, so knowing that you can make a difference in people's lives with this condition can be a real plus. That’s what happens with being an advocate.

You have to be willing to open yourself up to new environments, people, and possibilities.

Even though lupus is a chronic condition, I want to show people they can still make a difference and be able to provide for their family. At an event like this basketball event, you could nominate someone to be honored for their bravery with lupus and their journey.

Getting in to advocacy

So, I tell everyone do not fear what society will think about you if you want to be an advocate. Do not be afraid to open up and tell the truth. People love reality better than believing something that is not true.

Show the ins and out of your lifestyle and definitely show the good and the bad. Sometimes you will have depressed moments and you need to show that when you can, because people can relate to that as well. Being a strong individual can attract supportive people.

Take the time to learn yourself and what you can and can not handle. Some people will not be for you becoming an advocate and that’s fine, you win some and you lose some. But on this journey it is a fabulous opportunity. Don’t ever give up on your hopes and dreams.
